By Alex Bruton, Ph.D.

¡Bienvenido y bienvenida! This course activity schedule supports an MBA course being offered to students at CETYS Universidad in Tijuana Mexico in April and May 2019. It contains everything we will be doing in and between meetings, as well as links to the most important materials. You should consider this to be the definitive reference for what we’ll be doing / did every day.

Our full activity schedule

Hello! This is our teaching and learning Activity Schedule for our time together.

You can collapse / or expand each date range below for details. Check it daily to stay current.

Apr 25: Welcome + Start of 'Basic Training'

This is our first day together! We’ll be meeting from 6 to 10 pm. We’ll be getting to know each other a little, and you’ll learn what the course is all about. There’ll be nothing formally due for marks when you arrive but don’t miss this – we’ll be covering some pretty important stuff and starting to build our class culture. With our ideation warm-ups we’ll also begin covering the material on your first quiz. And you’re going to have a few “mini badges” to complete after today to get your feet under you.

All of this is the launch of the learning experience we’re going to be going through together!

Class time today

TimeActivities and topicsThings due or required
Part 1Welcome!
  • First thing today, I’ll provide an introduction to the course - to help you get to know me and to help you get to know what to expect in a class like this
  • I’ll also hand out a draft / discussion version of the course outline for you to read so we can discuss it together next time
Nothing’s due coming into today’s class, but be sure not to miss it - it’s an important introduction to what we’ll be doing this term and I’ll be covering what you need to be doing over the few days.
Part 2In the second part of today’s time together, you will need to Challenge the Minefield, with the goals of: 1) getting to know each other a little better; and 2) working as a class on a common challenge; and 3) introducing us to innovation and entrepreneurship. Details will be announced in class.-
Part 3In the third part we will begin your basic training for the upcoming Venture Design Studio:
  • We’ll do our first ideation warm-up to get to know each other a little. This is part warm-up, and - importantly - part introduction to ideation. In fact, as simple as this activity may seem in the moment, it’s the first of three such warm-ups we’re going to do on what I call the Ideation Fundamentals that will form the basis of your first quiz.
  • I’ll spend a little bit of time handing out an assignment to help you get ready for something we’ll do tomorrow called Brute Force Ideation, a simple (and as you will see, sometimes flawed) approach to coming up with ideas as a group
  • I’ll also give you a heads-up on the Mini-badge and other assignment you need to complete before class tomorrow.

Homework assigned today

Individual homeworkBefore class tomorrow:
  • Do Mini-badge #1
  • Complete the first personal ideastorming assignment

Apr 26: Ideation 'Basic Training' (cont.)

This is our second day together! We’ll be meeting from 6 to 10 pm. Plan to keep building your skills and expect to roll up your sleeves for a few important activities that will help you with Quiz 1 and to get ready for the Venture Design Studio (VDS) project which we will launch tomorrow.

Class time today

TimeActivities and topicsThings due or required
Part 1First thing today:
  • We’ll do our second ideation warm-up - the second of three such warm-ups we’re going to do on what I call the Ideation Fundamentals that will form the basis of your first quiz.
  • I’ll also take any questions you might have about the course or my expectations
Before coming to class be sure you:
  • Do Mini-badge #1 before today’s class
  • Complete the first personal ideastorming assignment
Part 2After that, we’re going to do something called ’Brute Force’ ideation - a quick, crude, but full cycle for coming up with ideas. We’ll seed that process using the ideas you came up with in the personal ideastorming assignment.
Part 3Then we’ll reflect on and criticize the earlier ’Brute Force’ process to set the stage for going deeper, and begin to use the ideation tools in something called the Idea Maker Game. It’s a game, but things will start getting real at this point, as will your abilities. And parts of it will be tested on Quiz 1. All of this is to help you round out your basic training for the Venture Design Studio project which launches tomorrow. I’ll also be handing out your second personal ideastorming assignment.

Homework assigned today

Individual homeworkBefore class tomorrow:
  • Complete Mini-badge #2 to find your individual folder on Google Drive. (Note that this can’t be done until I set you up, and I can’t do that if you didn’t do Mini-badge #1 on time.)
  • Complete the second personal ideastorming assignment

Apr 27: Team Formation launching the Venture Design Studio (VDS)

This is our third day together. We’ll be meeting from 8 am to 2 pm. We’re going to finish the ‘basic training’ and launch the Venture Design Studio project.

Class time today

TimeActivities and topicsThings due or required
Part 1First thing today:
  • We’ll do our last ideation warm-up - the last one on what I call the Ideation Fundamentals and will round out the ’Basic Training’ that will form the basis of your first quiz.
  • We’ll also take a few moments to connect with each other on how the course is going, in case I can do anything to make it better for you.
Before coming to class be sure you:
  • Complete Mini-badge #2 to find your individual folder on Google Drive. (Note that this can’t be done until I set you up, and I can’t do that if you didn’t do Mini-badge #1 on time.)
  • Complete the second personal ideastorming assignment
Part 2After taking a break we’ll do Quiz 1, which is based on our discussions around the three ideation warm ups and our use of the tools in the Idea Design Kit. This will be a 20-minute open book quiz.
Part 3Next, we will form teams for the Venture Design Studio project. This is a facilitated process and we’ll use a simple tool called the ’Picking a team’ form. In the end you will get to pick your own teams.
Part 4Then I will formally launch the Venture Design Studio project. You will have time with your teams to get organized to meet the deadlines for Iteration 1 (see below).
Part 5Finally, I will assign and discuss the next levels of the Venture Design Studio for the period between now and May 16 when we meet again
