Activity Schedule

If you’re learning this material in one of my in-person classes, then this is your teaching and learning Activity Schedule. Think of it as the definitive reference for what we’ll be doing / did every day. Collapse / or expand each date range for details. Check it daily to stay current.

Welcome! This is our first learning cycle in which you’ll tackle Level 1 of the course. We’ll be getting to know each other a little, and you’ll learn what the course is all about and what it’s like to take a class with me. There’s nothing formally due on the first day but don’t miss it – we’ll be covering some pretty important stuff, you’ll have some work to do to get your feet under you, and we’ll formally begin our learning.

Self-paced work for the lecture-quiz thread in Level 1

"Self-paced" means work that can be done on your own time and at your own pace. There is no live session to attend. Rather, time has been made available to you to do the work (see the schedule above). You should do this work over the duration of the level, and time it so you can be ready for and engaged with the synchronous sessions.

In this level, the self-paced work includes the following activities:
  1. Review the course outline, which is found on D2L under Content > Course outline.
  2. Watch this discussion with Kevin Crowe about the tools and approaches we’ll be using in this course and how he used them as a key part of the innovation strategy in his company. (Feel free to check out some of the other discussions too.)
  3. Go through the material in Level 1: Get your idea out of your head of our The Idea Maker Course. (This is our online textbook). You can get free access to this online textbook using my directions found on D2L under Content > Course schedule and online textbook.
  4. Read this article, looking for the connections between classical entrepreneurial strategy and the Idea Napkin framework studied here in Level 1: A Short Guide to Strategy for Entrepreneurs
  5. Review the self-assessment questions for Level 1. These are found on D2L under Content > For Level 1. Be sure you also review the guidance the self-assessment questions - what they are for and what they are not for. And, after doing this, make sure you bring your own questions and ideas to our synchronous (Monday) discussions.
  6. Get yourself a copy of Loonshots: How to Nurture the Crazy Ideas That Win Wars, Cure Diseases, and Transform Industries. (Part 1 of this book is our reading book to be tested on Quiz 7, but which you shouldn’t leave reading it to the end of the course.)
Optional reading:
  1. If you are interested in the connection between the frameworks in this course and other popular frameworks (such as design thinking, lean startup, the business model canvas, and others), you can also review this article: A practical integrative product and business design framework to enable new frontiers in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship
