Get yourself some ideation tools

During the upcoming ‘Basic Training’ sessions, we’re going to start using some ideation tools that will help you get good at assessing your own ideas and designing better versions of those ideas. This topic outlines your options for getting your hands on those tools.

In this course you’re going to need one of each of the following:

  1. One Idea Napkin
  2. One Idea Model
  3. One Critique Pad
  4. One pair of Idea Slide Rules

And there are several options for getting these. Choose one of the following options before the deadline.

Please be clear that you only need to buy a kit or part of a kit if you want to. The option is there (Options 2 and 3 below) because students who have taken the course before you have wanted to buy printed and laminated copies. But you can make your own (Option 1) and there is absolutely no disadvantage in doing so.

OPTION 1: I don’t want to spend any money at all on the tools …

No problem. If you’d rather not spend anything, you can print yourself the following worksheets before the deadline:

AND you’ll need to:

OPTION 2: I don’t want to print or make anything at all! I want to buy a whole fully assembled Idea Design Kit …

Great. You can do that too if you prefer. This will mean you don’t have to print or make anything and you’ll get it all in one nicely assembled folder in which you can keep your draft work too. It comes with the worksheets and the slides rules. And it also comes with a visual summary / overview of the design thinking process and the assessment criteria we’re going to be using.

When doing this be sure to use the educational discount code I provided through D2L / email. This will bring the cost down and make it so you don’t have to pay shipping. You can enter the discount code when viewing your cart or checking out.

And you can select the free shipping option after you enter an address. Also, if you don’t to enter your own address (a required field when purchasing), you can just enter the university’s address.

OPTION 3: I’m going to print the worksheets (OPTION 1 above) but I don’t want to assemble my own Idea Slide Rules …

Right on. If you want to print the worksheets (the first three bullets in OPTION 1) but you don’t want to make your own Idea Slide Rules, then you can do the following before the deadline:

OR:
