Our full activity schedule

Hello! We’re doing this semester together at a compressed pace, so this web page is pretty important. It contains our teaching and learning Activity Schedule for the three-week semester. Think of it as the definitive reference for what we’ll be doing / did every day. Collapse / or expand each date range for details. Bookmark it now, and check it constantly to stay current.

Jan 14-20: Welcome + getting our feet under us

Welcome! This is our first day together. We’ll be getting to know each other a little, and you’ll learn what the course is all about. There’s nothing formally due for marks yet when you arrive but don’t miss it – we’ll be covering some pretty important stuff, you’ll have a few “mini badges” to complete to get your feet under you, and we will begin the learning for real.

Date / timeActivities and topicsThings due or required
Mon hour 1Welcome and introduction (to each other and to the course)-
Mon hours 2-3Team formation 1: You’ll Challenge the Minefield (I’ll provide details about this in class) and before wrapping up for the day, I’ll explain what you need to do today and before we meet again Tuesday.-
Individual homework #1Sign in to this web page (top right side of the page) before the 1 pm deadline today and fill in the form at the top. This will let me know what gmail account you’ll be using so that I can upgrade your account and set some stuff up for you.Due by 1 pm today
Individual homework #2Complete Mini Badge 1: Getting set up on Google Drive before 7 pm today. This will go live mid afternoon for those who met the 1 pm deadline. I’ll email you via D2L when it’s up and it’ll be linked from here: Due by 7 pm tonight

This is for Mini Badge 2: Confirming You Did the Ideastorming Mission. Complete it before class begins on Tuesday. The Mini Badge and some background on ideastorming are accessed here: Due before class on Tuesday

May 16: More basic training and key concepts

Today we’re going to do some more important stage-setting for the Venture Design Studio. We’ll do this by going through some more of the fundamentals and by continuing the job of helping you get to know each other a little better – since you’ll be forming teams for that project on Thursday. So roll up your sleeves and dig in.

Date / timeActivities and topicsThings due or required
Wed hour 1Welcome back!
  • We’ll start today with the head-to-head competition to round out our Brute Force Ideation work from last time.
  • And we’ll do a second ideation warm-up. Like the one we did yesterday, it’s intended partly to get us warmed up and partly to help you get even better acquainted with the Ideation Fundamentals we began studying last time.
All of the May 14 homework should be complete now for all students, as should the second personal ideastorming assignment. Your ’group’ from yesterday should also come prepared for the mini competition we prepared for last time.
Wed hours 2-3Then we will:
  • Play a round of the Idea Maker Game - a high-paced design thinking based ideation game. You’re challenged to try and win the game of course, but it’s really meant as a way of giving you the basic training you’re going need on how to use the tools in your Idea Design Kit. As we’ll discuss, the basics of using these tools will also be tested on Quiz 1.
All of this will be important as we get into the upcoming Venture Design Studio project
Individual homework #1Complete the third personal ideastorming assignment (to be handed out and discussed in class)Bring to class tomorrow.
Individual homework #2Fill in the Picking a Darn Good Team form (to be handed out and discussed in class)Bring to class tomorrow.
